Household landfill diversion and the impact on methane emissions

Using Austin Resource Recovery route-day waste data from January 2010 through January 2020 and the program's staggered expansion to ARR-served residences with fewer than five units, the study estimates that household diversion behavior increased 45 percent and Austin's program cost per household was nine times the estimated social benefit of avoided methane. A separate national extrapolation combines Austin cost and diversion estimates with county landfill conditions and reports a median $478 per ton of CO2e avoided; it is not an observed national program result and omits other possible long-run benefits.
